Making the Move from Salesforce NPSP to NPC

Adopting new technology is never a one-size-fits-all journey, and Salesforce’s Nonprofit Cloud (NPC) is no exception. As we approach three years since its introduction, NPC has seen significant evolution and investment, sparking conversations about where nonprofits fall on the adoption curve.

At Canvas Cloud, we’re reflecting on this progression—from the initial skepticism that kept many organizations in a “wait and see” mode to the growing readiness of the early majority to embrace NPC. This blog explores where NPC stands today in its adoption lifecycle, why now might be the right time for your organization to consider migrating, and how we’re here to help make that transition seamless. Most of us have heard about the Product Adoption Curve, which tracks the way different types of users adopt a product at different phases in the product's life. Traditionally, the groups are broken up in the following five-phase model.

  • Innovators: Pioneers, the first to venture into uncharted territory. Making up a small fraction of the market, innovators are willing to take risks and enthusiastic about exploring novel concepts.

  • Early adopters: Social leaders, often regarded as opinion shapers and influencers within their communities. Early adopters are crucial in the diffusion process, as their endorsement serves as a beacon for subsequent groups.

  • Early majority: Pragmatic consumers who, while not as adventurous as the first two segments, are open to adopting new products once their benefits are proven and recognized. Reaching this segment marks the tipping point for a product’s entry into the mainstream market. 

  • Late majority: Skeptical towards change, the late majority adopts a new product out of necessity or peer pressure, long after it has been established in the market.

  • Laggards: The final group to come on board, laggards are the most resistant to change. They prefer sticking with familiar products until it becomes virtually impossible to do so.

As we approach the three-year anniversary of Salesforce unveiling their new Nonprofit Cloud (NPC), designed to finally be the best in class solution for everything Nonprofits need to manage their constituent relationships, we at Canvas Cloud find ourselves wondering where we are in the NPC Adoption Curve, and even more importantly, how we can help our customers through every phase of deciding when is the right time for them to move? 

During the last few years, our perspective has gradually shifted as we have witnessed Salesforce’s ongoing investment in rapidly improving NPC with their tri-annual product releases. We, along with other partners and customers, continue collaborating with Salesforce to create a strategic and intentional roadmap for future releases which builds on the bedrock strategy Salesforce.org created over a decade ago of creating solutions to solve problems identified by the community they serve. While in the beginning, our response to most customers thinking about jumping from the Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) to NPC was more often than not “let’s wait and see” you might already be able to guess where we fall in the adoption curve when it comes to new technologies. 

However, as mentioned before, as we have seen the product evolve and as we have worked with several organizations to implement NPC, the time for the Early Majority is on the horizon. This initiative will be one that organizations need to plan for and truly understand if NPC is right for them and what their journey will look like.
